Iowa State is all of the above, and yet made a$m sweat a bit. It was the kind of effort that will keep fans coming back, especially when the weather is spectacular.
The five-games-without-drawing-a-holding-penalty-streak is just sick, yet a symptom of being smaller, slower, and weaker on the DL than everyone else. Other teams don't get flagged because they don't have to hold (much) to get the job done.
Unfortunately my eyes are not trained enough to tell if ISU is getting better over time, if CPR recruits are an upgrade over Danny Mac or Chiz recruits. I do know that the schedule is getting better, er, tougher.
Heck, I think this team could beat this year's Utah, Colorado and maybe Nebraska. So it goes. FWIW- ISU has lost to 4 of the Sagarin Top 30. Iowa is 0-1. That's a huge difference.
Keep grinding- hopefully the corner is nearby.

Near Miss
While the Chiz era was a big slice of No Fun Football, at least we weren't saddled with the football genius of Tim Brewster. Its going to take the Gophers years to recover from him.

The Chiz
What bothers me now about the Chiz administration was the subtle condensation he had for Iowa State.
It was if ISU's problem wasn't the 2.5 star talent, it was that they just hadn't been coached up properly. Every other coaching staff was a bunch of dorks, you see. He's Coach "Super Genius". He'll show us how its done.
Yelling "I will not coach down to you" was perhaps not the best technique for a guy with exactly zero head coaching wins at the time. Way to bond with your new charges.
The look on his face after the SUI win told the whole story- he couldn't believe he won a game at all, let alone against a decent team.
I'm still surprised that Chiz had no idea what to do with anything other than five star talent- that's the sign of bad coaching. The difference between his teams in Ames and his teams in Auburn couldn't be more stark.
So it goes.

The school of coaching hires says you alternate personalities with each new coach, and ISU has with the hiring of Kevin Jackson. KJ is the outgoing rah-rah type that Cael wasn't, and for a team that has the resume to win a NC next year, it may be what is needed to push ISU over the top.
In one of the articles I read there was a small crack into criticisms of the Cael regime. One of KJ's points of emphasis would be to introduce himself to every wrestling program int he state of Iowa. Translation: The impression among state coaches was that Cael favored out-of-state over in-state, and KJ should try to change that.
Gene had open disdain for local talent, assuming there were only one or two DI players per year, so why bother. We saw how that worked out.
Hopefully KJ can build enough relationships to slow the flow of wrestling talent to IC.
Jackson is also taking the right tone with the press. It would have been easy to throw down the gauntlet on day one, but he knows that the Brands boys don't need any firing up. They are overcranked as it is.

Gone: Hoping the offense would learn the plays as the season went along.
In: Learning one play at a time, left and right, and not moving on until you know it.
Gone: Complex read blocks.
In: Zone blocking; Step out and hit somebody.
Gone: Gene (Super Genius) Chizik and his HOF 5-win career.

I like the changes so far.

Interviews
Various sites are reporting Gill isn't interested. I'm not surprised- ISU isn't much of a step up from where his Buffalo program is now.
Sagarin has UB #55, ISU #113. Why should he start over from (percieved) scratch?
Granted, ISU probably has more "upside", but Gill doesn't have to take the first bus out of Buffalo, unlike Gene.
Besides, we shoudl probably accept that perhaps Gene is just one of those rare people who kills interviews, and then crashes at whatever he gets hired to do. A friend of mine just fired someone who 6 months ago gave the best interview he had ever witnessed.
It happens. Perhaps Gene pulled another brilliant performance out of his visor.

Stepping Stone
Keeler wonders if we would be happy being a stepping stone, or if we will insist on a "I-want-to-retire-here" guy.
I see nothing wrong being a stepping stone. It would be better than what we have now.
Keeler does raise a good point: ISU is one of the toughest public university gigs among the BCS schools. The meek need not apply.

Trust
I'm having a hard time swallowing all the complains about Gene "abusing our trust". We all abuse everyone's trust.
We fired Dan with four years left on his contract, and plenty of folks wanted him gone before that. Where was the trust?
Suppose Gene had a breakout year this year: We pull out the tight ones against SUI, UNLV and KU, are 5-0 and are the talk of the league. Not only would Gene have left anyway, but you can bet that Jamie would have been shopping his resume, too. Where's the trust there?
As far as players leaving, we all have only one thing to trust: that athletes are at ISU for their sport and nothing else. Average athletes will look at academics, campus life, etc. when making a school choice; great athletes will look at their sport and their sport only when choosing. The fact we have guys thinking about leaving tells me Gene and crew were on the right track in recruiting.
Finally, any booster who was withholding donations until football improved but is taking Gene's departure personally is a hypocrite, and should understand why.

I wouldn't view that as a slam. Traditionally, your coach gets hired away only after you win a bunch of games. If you lose two or three coaches in a row to better gigs, it means you have won a pile of football games.
The fact that Gene lost 3.75 games for every one he won wasn't a deal breaker for Auburn makes this an anomaly, an outlier.
From here, I have a hard time seeing how becoming a stepping stone wouldn't be an improvement.
